The Journey

How God Has Led Us

From São Paulo to Manaus and back again, a story of faithfulness across four decades of ministry.

  • Answering the Call

John and Kathy Hayes began serving as missionaries to Brazil in 1983. In São Paulo they founded and directed the Center for Transcultural Missions (WEAC Center), preparing the Latin American missionary force to take the Gospel around the world.

  • Five Churches and a City of Refuge

During their 24 years in southern Brazil, John and Kathy planted five churches. Moved by the children living on the streets, they also founded a ministry to street kids called the City of Refuge.

  • Into the Amazon

In 2007 the Hayes moved to Manaus, where they pastored the Campos Sales church, served as regional overseer, and coordinated a church planting movement of over 30 churches with Amazon Missions. There John founded the Arrowhead Project to reach the tribal groups of the Amazon Basin.

  • Serving the Church at Home

For a season, John and Kathy served as pastors in Florida, California, and Colorado, while their hearts remained with the people of Brazil.

  • Returning to the Unreached

John and Kathy have returned to Brazil to serve two unreached people groups. With the Arrowhead Project in Manaus, they are evangelizing, training indigenous pastors, and planting churches among the tribes, mobilizing missionary efforts within Brazil’s 121 unreached tribes. In São Paulo, they assist Jim’s Kids, a ministry to street children with feeding centers for children at risk, through special projects.
